Registered Practical Nurse, Medical & Ortho Rehab Care
Medical and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation provides an environment where complex medical needs and active mobility goals come together in a way that keeps skills growing every shift. As a Registered Practical Nurse on this unit, you’ll work closely with patients facing diverse medical and orthopaedic challenges, applying tailored approaches to pain management, mobility, and long-term rehabilitation. Your expertise will be central to bridging hospital care with successful community transitions, supported by a strong interdisciplinary team of health care professionals. The progress patients make here is shaped by your ability to support safe mobility, readiness for physiotherapy and the day-to-day routines that move rehabilitation forward.
Is this you?
You are adaptable, always ready to adjust your approach to meet the dynamic needs of your patients. From conducting thorough admission assessments to collaborating with the care team on the best strategies for recovery, you know that flexibility is key. Whether its updating care plans based on the patient’s progress or addressing new challenges as they arise, you prioritize individualized care and smooth transitions. Your ability to quickly assess and respond to changing circumstances ensures both patient safety and continued recovery, while working closely with patients and families every step of the way.
Effective communication supports patients who may be processing pain, post-operative limitations, or uncertainty as they work toward their mobility goals. Listening closely to shifting concerns, whether related to discomfort, motivation, or changes in confidence, helps you adapt routines in ways that keep patients engaged and safe. Responding with patience and clarity reduces confusion and minimizes the stress that often accompanies rehabilitation. When tension or disagreement arises, a steady approach to conflict resolution helps maintain trust and allows care to move forward productively.
Early-career RPNs will recognize similarities in patient needs typically seen in General Medicine, while gaining added exposure to rehabilitation and orthopaedic cases that broaden practical skills. Exposure to mobility-focused care, orthopaedic recovery, and symptom management gives you a balanced mix of technical and interpersonal practice. Here you’ll have an opportunity to gain experience in wound care management and intravenous therapy. The collaborative team approach ensures you’re supported as you develop these critical skills, contributing to better patient outcomes and your professional growth.
